Entrepreneurship requires passion, determination and a certain doggedness, but perhaps the most important attribute for any entrepreneur to possess is creative thinking. Creativity is a process of looking at situations and problems from a fresh perspective, seeking out alternatives to the more orthodox or prosaic solutions. It can involve going beyond the obvious, identifying different patterns that might be hidden to others. It can also be embracing new ideas that initially seem unrealistic or unfeasible. Interestingly, though, the option that involves judging an idea on its realism is not considered part of the creative thinking process.

Other creativity exercises, such as random word association, can help develop an entrepreneur’s ability to connect ideas that don’t necessarily relate. Another technique is to create an ‘idea swarm’, which involves brainstorming ideas with a group of people and then selecting the most interesting ones for further consideration. Crowdsourcing can also be a great way to generate ideas, tapping into the collective knowledge of a group of people. Rapid prototyping is another creative ideation method that involves testing an idea before investing too much time and money.
