The Sanyo Xacti Water Proof

The sanyo xacti water proof

If underwater YouTubing were to become the next big thing, Sanyo's gun-shaped Xacti VPC-CA100 could be the camera to choose. It may cost a little more than your average pocket camcorder, but it's far more rugged and, most importantly, waterproof.

Although you're not going to be able to take the CA100 scuba diving, it can be submerged beneath 5ft of water for up to an hour, making it ideal for surfing or snorkelling trips and other water sports. The camcorder can also shoot high-definition video at 30 frames per second, or 14 megapixel still images.

It's the first waterproof camcorder to feature a digital image stabiliser, and offers a face-chasing function that automatically recognises faces in still pictures. Other features include an anti-blur mode, a 2.4in LCD screen and the choice of SD or memory card storage.

The CA100 doesn't record in the increasingly common AVCHD format, but its MPEG-4 files are easy to handle with the bundled TotalMedia Extreme for Sanyo software. However, it lacks the HDMI mini-jack that most other camcorders use, meaning you won't be able to connect the camera directly to a TV or HD monitor. It also doesn't have an external microphone jack or a tripod mount, but it does come with a rubber strap for keeping the camera snug and secure. Those with an interest in photography will be disappointed to find that manual settings are buried in the menu, rather than being front and centre.
