Scourge of War Gettysburg Review

A stunning re-creation of one of America’s bloodiest and most significant battles, scourge of war gettysburg review captures the challenges of commanding an army down to the regiment and gun level. With impressive 3D graphics, pausable real-time play, and historically accurate battlefield terrain, the game offers an unrivalled re-enactment of the tactical challenges faced by Union and Confederate commanders more than 130 years ago.

The game runs well, although the later levels – especially in which you control much bigger armies – can suffer from occasional slowdown, which is understandable considering how many units are on screen at once. However, the game is honest about this and explicitly states that it may not run as smoothly on some systems as others, which is refreshing.

The simulated battles are highly immersive, with a range of different unit types to command and a variety of scenarios. The game is also designed to offer a great deal of replayability, with the ability to customise battles and campaigns, as well as creating and playing new ones from scratch.

Despite some minor issues – most noticeably the annoying battery management system – a resounding recommendation for fans of hardcore strategy. This is a game designed to appeal to a very specific group of players, but with designer Nick Thomadis’ passion for history and track record in AI coding, it is unlikely to disappoint anyone who is willing to invest the time. Just be prepared for a bloody and brutal journey.
