Samsung 990 Pro Vs WD Black SN850X Review

The samsung 990 pro is a top-tier PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD with some of the fastest sequential read/write speeds around. It uses an in-house Samsung controller (codename Pascal) and the latest 176-layer TLC flash from SK Hynix.

In our CrystalDiskMark sequential benchmarks, the 990 Pro recorded a blistering 7,200MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write speed. That's a good bit faster than its predecessor, the Samsung 980 Pro, as well as the WD Black SN850X and SK Hynix Platinum P41, two of its biggest likely rivals.

But sequential performance doesn't always tell the whole story. In our tougher, non-sequential tests, the 990 Pro asserted itself more forcefully, particularly in our game-related performance benchmarks. Its 1.4GBps write throughput in Tom's Hardware's gaming storage test was the best we've ever seen from any consumer SSD, including a few pricier options.

Those fast read/write numbers aren't quite as impressive in our tougher IOPS and random benchmarks, though. In our 4K Q32T16 and random 4K Q1T1 benchmarks, the 990 Pro was just a hair slower than the Black SN850X. That's still plenty quick enough for most gamers, but it's worth mentioning if you're considering this drive.
