The original version of "When a Man Loves a Woman" was recorded by Percy Sledge in 1966 and hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts. Michael Bolton's cover was released in 1991 as the title track to his seventh studio album, Time, Love & Tenderness. It was a major hit and his second US number one single. The song was also covered by Bette Midler and country singer John Wesley Ryles. Co-producer Walter Afansieff played organ on the Bolton recording. He originally didn't like Bolton's vocal, but changed his mind after he heard the finished product.
