The Lenovo IdeaPad S340 is one of the more affordable 15.6-inch ThinkPad laptops with an IPS display. The laptop comes in a variety of different configurations but our test model here is the top-spec option with an Intel Core i5-8265U Whiskey Lake processor, 1080p IPS display and a 512GB SSD for $700 on sale (you can also find versions with older dual-core i3 processors for under $400).
This budget laptop has a very attractive design with slim side and top bezels. The platinum gray color scheme is very modern and the rounded corners of the keyboard and display give it a premium look. The S340 is also surprisingly thin and light at only 17 mm thick and 1.79 lb. It's well suited for business use and casual travel.
Unlike other laptops in this price range the S340's keyboard feels comfy and snappy to type on, with enough travel (the distance the keys move when struck) to avoid feeling shallow or cheap. It's also backlit and features Alt-enabled hotkeys for disabling the microphone and webcam as well as dedicated media keys above the numeric keypad.
The 720p webcam makes it easy to videoconference or chat with friends online. The S340 has plenty of ports including two USB-A, a full-size HDMI and a separate power input for charging the battery. It's also equipped with a 4-in-1 SD card reader which is very rare on a laptop at this price.
