HTC One M8 Gets Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2

The HTC One M8 is a unique smartphone in that it runs Microsoft Windows Phone as opposed to Google Android. Though that may be a turn off for many, the One M8 is a sleek and stylish flagship with top-notch hardware. It's not without its limits, however, including a more limited app store compared to iOS and Android. But for WP loyalists like HTC's fans, the platform still provides a good experience as long as it is supported by manufacturers and carriers.

One of those is Verizon, which is rolling out a new update to the device. This OTA update, known as Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2, adds native MKV video playback to the handset along with a number of other changes including a redesigned Settings menu and kill switch.

Another change is the HTC Zoe engine, which combines photos and videos into highlight reels accompanied by canned music. The redesigned version removes some of the effects that made the Zoe feature fun, such as snowflakes and flower petals, while also stripping away HTC's Sense TV streaming functionality.

If you're interested in getting an early taste of Android 11 on the One M8, you can register for a beta build through the Android Insider program. The process isn't for the faint of heart and will require some serious patience, but you'll be rewarded with a much faster smartphone that supports all the latest features of Android including Material Design, two styles for recent apps, Android Beam, and more.
