How to Use the Zonai Device in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

A major new element in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is ancient technology known as zonai devices, capable of doing all sorts of wondrous things like launching Link into the air or turning lava into a walking platform. These mysterious machines can make the game much easier to navigate, but it's important to know how to use them properly in order to get the most out of them.

A new feature in the Kingdom of Hyrule is an item called a Device Dispenser, which is used to create zonai devices by dropping in a certain type of object. You can find these dispensers all over the map, including over some of the Lomei labyrinths you'll have to conquer, and each one has its own pool of devices it can yield.

In addition to the aforementioned zonai devices, you'll also be able to build vehicles and weapons by using these machines. However, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming at first, and figuring out what to do with all these new tools can be confusing. That's why we've put together this guide to help you get started.

How to use the zonai device

To use a zonai device, you'll need a Zonai Energy Cell, which can be found by talking to a Maker Construct, picking up dropped items from defeated constructs, or exchanging Zonaite at the forges in the Depths. Afterwards, you'll be able to open your inventory and click on a Zonai Device Dispenser to see a list of available devices it can yield. You can pick and choose which ones you want to drop in, with the number of portable devices you'll be able to receive at any given time depending on whether you're using ordinary or large Zonai Charges.

Once you've selected the items you wish to drop in, simply press X to confirm and watch the machine work its magic. Each device has its own unique property that can be utilized in different ways, such as a rocket that offers quick thrust or a flame emitter that can be attached to weaponry. In some cases, you may need to use the Ultrahand ability to attach the device, and in others, you'll just have to hit it once to activate it.

The Zonai are an ancient race that had highly advanced technology, as evidenced by the ruins and constructs they left behind throughout the Kingdom of Hyrule. They disappeared thousands of years before the events of Breath of the Wild, and their only members were Rauru and his sister Mineru. They appear in this game as a force for good, as even the Steward Constructs are able to recognize Link as a Zonai and don't attack him.

The appearance of these ancient machines in the Kingdom of Hyrule suggests that the Zonai were responsible for the serpentine iconography and swirl designs that can be seen all over the kingdom, from the ruined temples in Faron to the pillars on the floating islands in the sky. They also bear a striking similarity to the Interlopers from Twilight Princess, with their long ears and animalistic looks.
