How to Change Your Device ID

A device id is a unique string of numbers and letters that identifies a mobile device like a smartphone or tablet. It is used to track the user and provide marketers with insights into their usage patterns, app preferences, and more for improved campaign targeting.

While in the past any app could retrieve a device ID, since iOS 14.5 and Android’s GAID (Google Advertising ID) users have been automatically opted out of this tracking and can only allow apps to access their device ID by opting in on an app-by-app basis. This change is a great step towards maintaining user privacy and providing the best possible mobile experience.

When you click on an ad for an app or download an app for the first time, the mobile app that you are installing will send a request to the device’s operating system for the device id code. This id is typically a 40-character sequence of letters and numbers. For example, Apple’s device id is called UDID or IDFA and is a combination of 8 digits, a dash, and three sets of 4 digits. Apple’s device id is unique to each iOS user’s phone or tablet and can only be retrieved in iTunes or by downloading certain free apps from the app store.

Once an app receives permission from a user to access their device id, it will use a straightforward function call to retrieve this code. The app then uses this information to attribute the user’s view or install of a specific ad, thus informing the marketing team of the impact of their campaign.

In the case of ad personalization, an app developer will create an algorithm that recognizes a user’s interests and preferences to deliver more relevant ads across different channels. To do this, the app developers need to collect a variety of data on the app usage habits and interactions with their ads. This data can be collected in a variety of ways such as web page visits, app downloads, in-app purchases, and more.

This data allows the marketers to target users with highly relevant and personalized ads that will result in more engaged users. This translates to higher conversion rates and ultimately increased revenue for the companies. In addition, it also helps to build better relationships between users and brands by enabling them to deliver personalized experiences across all channels.

The benefits of device id tracking are vast, but there is also concern among some consumers about their privacy and how this information is used. This is why it is important for consumers to be aware of how they can manage their preferences and opt out of ad tracking on an app-by-app basis.

With root access to the Android operating system, you can edit a file which contains the app-specific device ids. However, this file is not accessible without a factory reset and changing the user ID may not always be possible depending on the complexity of your Android system.
