How Fast Can a Gorilla Run?

In short bursts, gorillas can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour on the ground. However, the majority of their movement takes place in the trees where they can utilize their arms to maintain balance and travel across branches.

In fact, a gorilla is four to nine times stronger than an average human. This strength is a key component of their survival in the wild. When they are threatened, they have the ability to beat a human in a fight with their strength alone. Their powerful arms can punch or hit with force, and their long fingers are nimble enough to grasp anything within reach. Additionally, a silverback gorilla’s mouth can deliver a bite that is 1,300 PSI strong, enough to break bones and kill an enemy.

Gorillas stand apart from other primates in their size, social structure, diet, intellect, problem-solving, and compassion. Despite their massive size, they can move rapidly through rough terrain at a faster pace than humans due to their tremendous strength.

While gorillas are much quicker than other primates, they aren’t as fast as the big cats like lions, tigers, and leopards. Fortunately, the current population of mountain gorillas is thriving, and their numbers are increasing.

Nevertheless, Usain Bolt, the world-famous sprinter, would easily beat a gorilla on an athletic track. Then again, these top athletes train in special shoes that offer optimum traction and allow them to propel forward at high speed. Unless you are an Olympic sprinter, your chances of outrunning a gorilla in the jungle are slim to none.
