Epson Expression Photo XP850

The epson expression photo xp850 is a premium, high-end four-in-one with a full fax function. It has the 'Photo' tag on its label, but also offers a 30-sheet ADF for scanning, and an impressive range of extra functions.

A 3.5-inch touchscreen has intuitive gesture navigation and the 'My Image Garden' software suite provides an easy and fun way to get creative. A rear paper feed allows you to print on card stock and envelopes and there's a separate slot for direct CD/DVD printing. The scanner's optical resolution is a very respectable 1200x2400dpi and Auto Photo Correction makes images look better by detecting faces and correcting skin tones.

There's a generous selection of connection options, including USB, 10/100 Ethernet and phone line input for the fax machine. A flip-open cover on the left side reveals slots for SD and MemoryStick cards, and there's a PictBridge socket below this. A 'Scan to Cloud' function lets you send documents to the epson expression photo xp850 from any device that can access a network, while Epson Connect*3 enables mobile printing from anywhere in the world.

The epson expression photo xp850's talents lean toward photos, but it's also a well-featured color inkjet multifunction with fast performance and top-notch output quality. Its price is a little high, however, and it's not quite as good value as the Canon Pixma MG8220 Wireless Inkjet Photo All-In-One or HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One. Its poor text and graphics print quality on plain paper make it a bit of a disappointment, despite the premium tag.
