Do Heat Spreaders on RAM Help?
In the case of RAM modules (random access memory), a heat spreader is used to prevent overheating and improve processing functions. This piece of metal encloses the RAM stick and transfers the heat from the chip to the rest of the module so it can be dissipated efficiently. Without a heat spreader, the RAM could overheat and cause damage to your computer.
However, while a RAM heat sink may be useful for overclocking, it isn’t essential in most cases. RAM doesn’t get hot enough to be a significant problem in most PCs, especially if you have a good airflow system that moves the hot air out of your case. In fact, if you overclock your RAM, it’s best to use the included heatsink, as this helps keep temperatures down even more and will protect the modules from potential damage.
Having said that, there are some instances when RAM with a heat spreader is necessary, such as when you’re using a CPU air cooler. This type of cooling solution tends to be taller than a liquid CPU cooler, and RAM with a large heat spreader can interfere with the installation process.
Another scenario where a RAM with a heat spreader is important is when you’re using a custom-built desktop. Many PC builders prefer to install custom RAM that has a unique design or RGB lighting effects, and these types of RAM often come with a large heatsink that may not fit in some cases. Fortunately, there are some RAM kits that allow you to swap out the heat spreader for one with a smaller fin design to better fit your system.
