Canon MP490 Printer Review

A capable photo inkjet printer that doubles as a scanner and copy machine, this Canon all-in-one offers high-quality prints at an affordable price. Its rounded cornered box-shape and reflective computer grey finish are attractive, and the MP490 is a compact unit that fits easily on most desks. It can print crisp 4"x6" borderless photos in about 43 seconds and provides a color LCD to help you select images to print. In addition, this model features the QuickStart feature that enables you to start printing immediately upon powering up. And thanks to the ChromaLife 100+ system, it prints durable photos that are resistant to fading for up to 30 years.

Its rear input tray has a maximum capacity of 100 sheets and helps support low-volume printing. The unit operates with two separate Canon PIXMA MP490 ink cartridges, including a tricolor supply that includes cyan, magenta and yellow inks, as well as a black supply. Standard tricolor cartridges yield around 244 pages and black replacements can last up to 220 pages. The MP490 supports direct memory card printing and can also scan directly to a computer or to a USB flash drive.

The unit comes with a CD with PDF versions of the user manual and two software applications. Canon MP Navigator EX allows users to access and print images from a variety of sources, while Easy-PhotoPrint EX is a suite of tools for photo work and creation. Both programs can also be used to print scanned documents and to create calendars.
